Chicken Souvlaki with Greek Salad & Tzatziki Sauce



In Mediterranean, chicken, lamb or veggie souvlaki, (Souvlaki comes from the Greek word Souvla which means skewer) are popular fast food items usually eaten with Greek salad and Tzatziki sauce.


For Chicken Souvlaki:

1-pound boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1 inch chunks

2 tbsp. lemon juice

3 tbsp. olive oil

1 tbsp. dried oregano

2 garlic cloves, pressed

salt and pepper to taste

For Tzatziki Sauce:

1 cup of plain yogurt

½ cup minced cucumber

¼ cup minced fresh parsley or mint

salt and pepper to taste

For Greek Salad:

1 Head romaine lettuce, cut into stripes

½ Green pepper, diced

½ Red onion, sliced

4 Cherry tomatoes, cut in half

1 Cucumber, sliced

Feta cheese, cubed

10 Kalamata Olives, cut in half

Greek Salad Dressing:

1 garlic clove, pressed

1 tsp dried oregano

6 tbsp. olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste


For Chicken Souvlaki:

  1. Combine the lemon juice, olive oil, oregano, salt, pepper and garlic, along with 1 tablespoon of water, in a bowl. Add the chicken pieces and toss to coat. Marinate for at least an hour.
  2. Heat a grill or grill pan over medium
  3. Remove the chicken from the marinade and thread the chicken pieces onto 4 skewers.
  4. Place the chicken on the grill and cook for 5 minutes on each side or until chicken is cooked through.
  5. While the chicken is cooking make the sauces.

For Tzatziki Sauce:

  1. Mix together the yogurt, cucumber and parsley or mint.
  2. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Refrigerate until ready for use.

For Greek Salad:

  1. Place Greek Salad Dressing ingredients in a jar and shake until well combined. Set aside for 20 minutes to let the flavors infuse.
  2. Place the tomato, cucumber, onion, feta and olives in a bowl, pour over dressing. Toss to combine.
